Essential oil safety is extremely important for you and your family and even our fury friends.

Essential Oils can pose a toxic risk to your pets especially cats. You may ask why are some essential oils so dangerous for cats? Essential oils are rapidly absorbed through the skin or orally and are metabolised in the liver. Cats are at great risk of being poisoned by certain essential oils as cats are missing an essential enzyme in their liver that helps to metabolise essential oils therefore they are at risk of poisoning from these particular essential oils. It doesn't matter what brand the essential oil is it is actually the higher the concentration of essential oil i.e. 100% the greater the risk to the cat.

Essential Oils that are toxic to cats include -

Citrus Oil (Including lemon)

Peppermint Oil

Tea Tree Oil

Eucalyptus Oil

Cinnamon Oil

Clove Oil

Ylang Ylang Oil

Sweet Birch Oil

Pennyroyal Oil

Pine Oil

Wintergreen Oil

Always be cautious when diffusing these oils arounds cats using an active diffuser as droplets dispersed by your diffuser can drop onto your cats fur. It is also recommended if you are planning on using these oils that your cat is not in the room at the time of diffusing these oils as the inhalation of these oils can be enough to make you cat ill. Symptoms that can develop depend on the which oil your cat has been exposed to and can include drooling, vomiting, tremors, wobbliness, respiratory distress, low heart rate, low body temperature, and liver failure.

All these oils have great properties so you may wish to still use some of these oils when cleaning your home or for the health of your family. However I do recommend being cautious so that your fury friend can't be exposed to the oil. For example I use lemon essential oil in my load of washing this wouldn't pose a risk for your cat.

Just another reason why you should switch to Natural Cleaners.

Researchers have found that deterioration in lung function of women working as cleaners or regularly using cleaning products was the same as smoking 20 cigarettes a day over 10 to 20 years. The eczema would come and go and always seemed to be worse in winter when the air was drying. Winter would also be when we wouldn't be swimming in the ocean which is one of my families favourite pass time in summer (salt water is also excellent for eczema).

Hughie my third child also had eczema and I didn't want to use steroid creams on him when he got a flare up and that was when I discovered the wonder's of coconut oil for eczema. I started adding coconut oil to Hughie's bath daily and after a few daily baths the eczema disappeared. Daily coconut oil baths became my routine for Hughie and the eczema didn't return.

I also noticed that Hughie never had a nappy rash while I gave him these coconut oil baths. I later researched and discovered that coconut oil has antimicrobial, anti-bacterial, and anti-fungal properties which keep a baby bottom soft and free of nappy rash. The Fijian women have known about coconut oil for nappy rash for a long time and they use it on their babies bottoms.

Hughie also had cradle cap and I also discovered that the coconut oil was excellent for this. I would put the coconut oil on his cradle cap and leave it for 5 minutes to soften and then comb it out.

All my children are now at school and have outgrown their eczema but when I think back to the day when I discovered coconut oil to help them with their dry skin condition and am thankful.

Reasons why Coconut Oil works well on dry skin conditions, eczema, cradle cap and nappy rash -

* Coconut Oil is one of the very few natural sources of Lauric Acid. Another is mother's breast milk. Lauric Acid is converted into monolauric acid, which has antimicrobial, anti-viral, anti-bacterial and antifungal properties. Coconut oil application is particularly effective against Staphylococcus aureus infection that very frequently complicates eczema.

*Coconut Oil is an excellent moisturiser it gets absorbed into the skin and softens the skin. Keeping the skin moist and soft is a key to stopping eczema breakouts.

*Coconut Oil also helps to relieve the itching that is associated with dry skin, nappy rash and eczema, .

*Coconut Oil is also anti-inflammatory which helps for people who suffer from eczema as in eczema sufferers an inflammatory response could be set off from from contact with rough surfaces, plastics, soaps etc.

Xmas Gifts Day 2 - Exfoliating Sugar Scrub

Here is another really easy Homemade Natural Christmas Gift made from ingredients that you will probably already have in your home. Being a Natural Mama I am not happy about my kids playing with either of these with their hands.2) Slime gets on clothes, bedding or carpet it isn't easy to get out. This made me a happy Natural Mama, I will share this recipe with you in another post.

I also found that slime is easily removed with one of my favourite natural household cleaners, vinegar. All you need to do is soak the slime affected area with vinegar and then remove the slime with water and wash like normal. The same applies if you get slime on your carpet pour a little vinegar over the slime and then wipe with a cloth and clean with water.

So with this knowledge we can let our kids enjoy playing with slime as long as the slime phase continues happy knowing that we can clean it off clothes and carpet and make slime that doesn't contain glue and borax.

Natural Laundry Stain Removers that you probably already have in your Kitchen Cupboards.

Using natural laundry stain removers for most stains on clothes works very well. I use it daily as a stain remover for your kids white cotton school tops. It even removes tomato sauce stains.

White Vinegar is a great natural fabric softener and when added to the final rinse section of your washing machine will keep your clothes soft. Adding the vinegar to the final rinse also helps to keep your clothes smelling fresh even if you leave them in the washing machine for a while prior to hanging your clothes out.

Using white vinegar in your washing machine regularly will help to keep away musty washing odour and clean your washing machine.

2 # Lemon / Lime

Adding lemon or lime Juice directly to the stain to get rid of stains on whites will also help to fade yellow underarm or perspiration stains on clothes.

However if you do get some on your coloured clothes remove before it discolours your clothes.

You can also add a few drops of lemon or lime essential oil into your liquid draw in your machine to ensure your clothes come out smelling fresh with a lovely lemon or lime scent.

3 # Baking or Bicarbonate Soda

Adding 1/2 a cup of baking or Bicarbonate Soda to your natural washing powder will give you whiter whites and brighter colours. The Baking or Bicarbonate Soda also helps to soften the water so you can use less washing powder or detergent.

4 # Hydrogen Peroxide

Head into your medicine cabinet to find a bottle of hydrogen peroxide to replace bleach to whiten your clothes. Hydrogen peroxide or H2O2 has strong oxidising properties which makes it a powerful bleaching agent. You can pick up a 3% solution from your local chemist or supermarket.

Add the solution to the stain prior to washing. You can use on both whites and colour fast clothes. It is great for removing red wine, underarm stains and curry stains which can sometimes be difficult to get out.

Peppermint Essential Oil for Household Pests

Peppermint Essential Oil has lots of uses but today I am going to concentrate on its use with common household pests. We all want to limit our households exposure to toxic chemicals, so the best way I have found to keep ants away naturally is with Peppermint Essential Oil. The Peppermint Essential Oil kills the ants on contact and the smell of the oil deter's them away. You can either place a few drop of essential oil in areas that are affected or you can make up your own peppermint essential spray by combining 10 drop of peppermint essential oil and water in a small spray bottle (cosmetic size). Then spray around sideboards and entry points and anywhere where the ants are seen.

Peppermint is also a good deterrent for spiders as they don't like the smell and they taste with their legs. Planter wart grow inward beneath the skin and can be recognised by a hard thicken spot of the skin which is where the wart has grown inwards. You will also notice black pinpoints, which are commonly called wart seeds but are actually small, clotted blood vessels.

Planter warts are caused by a version of the HPV Virus (more than 100 versions of the HPV virus exist). This strain of the HPV Virus isn't highly contagious however it does thrives in warm moist environments. Consequently you may contract the virus from walking barefoot around swimming pools or change rooms. We visited many hotel pools and change rooms while overseas, so I do believe this is where my daughter would have picked this up from. Children and teenagers and people with weakened immune systems are more likely to be affected than others from this virus.

I left my daughter foot for a while and promised her that I would find a natural solution to get rid of the wart without having to go to the Dr's to have it frozen off. After much research I decided I would try Tea Tree Oil on her planter wart. I did this once a day just before bedtime and within only a few days we both noticed an improvement in the size of the wart and then after about a week she came to me and said "look at my foot it is now flat again where i had my lump and it no longer hurts".

It was such an easy solution and I would try this before any other over the counter solutions or a trip to the Dr to freeze it off. However if this doesn't start working for your child after a few weeks i would consult a Dr especially if you child is still in pain from the Planter Wart on their foot.

No More Toilet Smell Naturally

If your bathroom is like mine anytime after daddy has been to the toilet no one likes to go in for about 10 minutes or more because of the smell. My first daughter suffered many ear infections and every time she suffered an ear infection the Dr would prescribe antibiotic's. She hated the taste of the medicine so it was always a struggle to get it into her. The ear infection would go away after taking the antibiotic's but not without a couple of nights of disrupted sleep.

By the time my second daughter came along I thought there must be a better way. After researching natural method's for ear infections I made first batch of Garlic Oil. Using Garlic Oil made sense as Garlic has antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal properties. I made my first batch of Garlic Oil and used it not long after I had made it on my daughter who was complaining of a sore ear. After putting the drops in my daughters ear she stopped complaining of the pain and drifted off to sleep. I continued this for the next 3 days and the ear infection was gone without the need of antibiotics and no nights of disrupted sleep for anyone. I continued to take my daughter to the Dr's to ensure that the infection had cleared and that there was no redness in her ear. The garlic oil was great however you have to prepare the garlic oil in advance and heat it until only slightly warm before putting a couple of drops in the ear.

An easier method is taking a garlic clove about the same size of your child's outer ear boiling it in water for a couple of minutes so it is slightly soft but not mushy. You then allow it to cool until just warm and then putting it in the outer ear only then keeping it in place with a band aid across the ear. This worked just as well as the garlic oil and provided instant relief for my child. As a family we call this "GARLIC EAR" my kids love it as it takes the pain away and they sleep without the need for any antibiotics. I would repeat this for 3 nights minimum and take my child back to the Dr to ensure that they no longer have a red eardrum. Always seek medical advice if your child is sick along with any natural remedies you decide to use.

How to make your own Natural Hand Sanitiser

Many store bought hand sanitiser's are filled with chemicals and alcohol. My third child had just turned 1 and I had had an eczema type rash on the insides of my arm's since just after he was born. I had never had eczema before in my life so I was perplexed to why suddenly after having my third child I had such a bad rash. I tried everything natural on the eczema like rash first and then resorted to steroids creams to control it as it was alway's itchy. The steroids cream would make it go away for a while and then the rash would come back again after I stopped.

Finally a Dr decided to test me for Golden Staph he took swab's off my arms and nose. The swabs came back positive and he believed I had picked up the infection while in hospital when I having my third child. Unfortunately to get rid of the infection I had to go on two types of strong antibiotics and use a bacterial ointment on my arm's. By taking these over a period of two weeks I knew that gut bacteria would be wreaked so I started researching the best probiotic to use and this is when I discovered Kefir.

I read about all the different strains of bacteria kefir had and couldn't find anything else available comparable in the healthcare market. I was nervous about buying live kefir grains so I first bought the kefir probiotic powder. I made my first batch and loved it. After a few weeks I decided to order some live kefir grains from a supplier who had a good reputation. Then began my journey with my Kefir Grains 4 years ago.

My Kefir grains were flourishing so I would share and sell my kefir grains. I had some wonderful feedback from customers on how it had changed there lives and improved their health by taking kefir daily. One message in particular stands out as this particular lady had been seeing a gastroenterologist for severe digestive health issue's and on her visit after taking the kefir the gastroenterologist couldn't believe the improvement. He asked what she had been doing and she told him that she had been consuming kefir daily. He said he would do his research into kefir and decide whether he should be recommending to other patients.

I encourage you to start your kefir journey as soon as possible by buying some kefir grains and make your first batch of kefir. If you don't have time to make your own you can buy kefir now in any major supermarket or health food shop in most area's.

Oh no my child has Nits

I received the dreaded letter from my child's pre school, "There has been several cases of Nit's in you child's room please check your child's hair for Head Lice". So I checked for what they described as egg's shells which are white small or clear shells that stick to the hair shaft so easy to spot in your child's hair. Oh dear I spotted the shell's so I go and purchase expensive Nit Removal product and comb looking for the most natural solution possible. This removed most of the Head Lice but then found that my child would have head lice again the following week and repeated the process again (the head lice have an approximately 2 week cycles so therefore you need to repeat the process several times within the 2 week period).

Buying the Head Lice removal products over time became expensive so I thought there must be a better way. I discovered the conditioner method which cover your child's hair in conditioner and leave the conditioner in the hair for a minimum of 20 minute's covering your child's hair with a shower cap. Start from the nape of the neck and around near the ears as the head lice will try and escape but can't if you cover these area's first. Then use your Nit comb to comb through all sections of the hair until you are happy that you have removed all nits and as many egg's as possible. You should repeat this process 2 times a week over the next fortnight and then check your child's hair for nit's once a week.

Once Head Lice is under control the best prevention for Nit's is either using a shampoo that contain's tea tree oil or adding this to your existing shampoo and or conditioner (Tea Tree has a repellant effect on Head Lice). If adding to your conditioner the ratio is 2 drops of tea tree essential oil to approx. 50ml's of shampoo or conditioner. The best way to mix is to buy a seperate travel size bottle's you can mix small batches of your Head Lice prevention Shampoo and Conditioner. Another way is to make a detangling leave in conditioner spray for your child's hair and spray on daily before school.

30 ml's of Natural or Organic Conditioner

45ml's of Distilled Water

30ml's of Coconut, Avocado Oil or Virgin Olive Oil.

Add 3 drops of tea tree essential oil

Cleaning with Lemons

I love using lemons and limes in cooking but did you also know lemons and limes are excellent cleaners and can help clean you kitchen.
